iUndelete™: NTFS undelete and file recovery
iUndelete™ [NTFS]
iUndelete [NTFS] is a fast, safe and easy to use Windows XP/2003/Vista NTFS undelete and file recovery utility. iUndelete uses a wizard type process that guides you through the procedure step by step. iUndelete offers three modes of operation, covering the entire spectrum of NTFS data recovery scenarios:

Undelete mode: Recover deleted files.
Allows you to quickly recover files that were deleted from the recycle bin, and files that bypassed the recycle bin altogether (files that were deleted by Windows, processes, applications, etc).
Unformat mode: Recover files from formatted/damaged volumes.
Allows you to rescue files from volumes that have been formatted, and from volumes that are otherwise damaged (for instance: a volume that was accidentally deleted and then recreated using Disk Management, or a volume that was corrupted by a power failure).
Typical symptoms would be: the volume appears to be RAW or unformatted / Windows may ask 'do you want to format now?'.
Partition Recovery mode: Recover files from inaccessible volumes.
Scan for deleted or otherwise lost volumes and recover data from them. Once the lost volume has been located iUndelete will continue in Unformat mode, analyze the volume, and save the files.
Typical symptoms would be: the volume does not show in the Disk Management tool and does not appear in the Windows Explorer.

iUndelete™ features

iUndelete is a complete file recovery tool for NTFS drives, for the price of a conventional undeleter!

Recover deleted files including those that were deleted from the Windows Recycle bin, or have been deleted by any other means
Recover files from formatted NTFS drives, even after changing the format (to FAT or other types)
Recover from corrupt NTFS drives: iUndelete allows access to drives on a physical level for severely corrupted file systems
Recover files from deleted or otherwise lost volumes
Ease of use: automatic file system parameter detection (such as cluster-size) for formatted or corrupt drives
Recover files including the complete folder/file path
Easy to use wizard-type interface
Non destructive, read-only scan
Attempts to lock the source drive to prevent Windows (or other processes) from overwriting lost or deleted files
Unique data recoverability prediction for individual files and the entire volume
Supports native NTFS compression (decompress data on-the-fly so data can be saved to drives that do not support NTFS compression, like FAT32)
Filters known garbage files to present a cleaner file list
Customizable file filters
iUndelete is portable and does not require a setup; copy and run 'iUndelete.exe' from anywhere you like (e.g. run from USB key or CD directly)

A real test drive! The iUndelete trial version offers -all- the functionality of the registered version, but with the following limitations:

You can only select and copy one file at a time
You can not copy folders
A 3 second delay occurs before the selected file is copied
A pop-up message is displayed with each file copied

After purchasing a license online and receiving a license key (which is typically delivered within a few minutes) you can immediately start recovering your files without having to scan the drive again.

Unique: quick recoverability prognosis of lost data
iUndelete features a unique file validation function: files detected during a scan are examined and checked for typical characteristics for a given file type. The validation recognizes 18 common and frequently found file types. Based on results for individual files iUndelete creates a prognosis for the quality of the entire file system that contains the files.

Note that if iUndelete is running in 'undelete mode' the prediction only applies to deleted files!

Please note that file validation can never replace the ultimate test: the only way to be certain if files were correctly restored is to open and verify them.

Important information: when to use the portable version
If you need to recover files from a system drive:

The safest thing would be to shut down Windows and boot the PC from a parallel Windows installation, or move the disk to another PC and attach it as a data drive. If this is not possible:

  • Stop all non data recovery related processes and tasks. These include automatic update tasks (Windows, Virus Scanners), backup jobs, network sharing services, peer to peer download programs, CD/DVD-burn sessions etc. Under no circumstances should you attempt to defrag the drive or allow 'chkdsk' to run. You may want to consider disconnecting the PC from the internet before shutting down firewalls/virus-scanners.

  • If you have an additional PC you can download the portable 'iUndelete.exe' file (no setup is required) and copy it to a CD/DVD or USB key. Run the program on the problem PC to recover files.
If you don't have an additional PC, download the portable 'iUndelete.exe' file directly to a removable device, such as a USB key. Run the program from there to recover files.

If you need to recover files from a non system drive

Stop all processes and applications that might access the affected drive. These include automatic update tasks (Windows, Virus Scanners), backup jobs, network sharing services, peer to peer download programs, CD/DVD-burn sessions etc. Download, install (not to the problem drive!) and run iUndelete as quickly as possible.
